Begin a core-bit selection with the sample you need and the drilling assembly you use. Then compare the cutting structure with the ground. FSDRILL presents PDC core bits, hot-pressed core bits and electroplated diamond core bits as separate product families.

Understand the names

PDC is a diamond-based compact cutter fixed to the tool. Here, the comparison with “diamond core bits” refers to the other diamond-crown families in the catalogue. It does not mean PDC contains no diamond. Hot pressing describes a manufacturing route; the crown drawing and material specification are needed to identify the actual diamond and matrix construction.

Compare what is documented

FamilyConfiguration to compareOrdering focus
PDC core bitDiscrete cutters around an annular crown, with a core passage and flushing paths.Cutter layout, outer gauge, core opening, barrel interface and formation.
Hot-pressed core bitThe specified annular crown, matrix and diamond configuration.Crown specification, dimensions, flushing version and barrel connection.
Electroplated core bitThe documented plated diamond cutting surface and crown geometry.Selected model, cutting surface, dimensions, interface and intended application.

Use ground information to narrow the choice

Describe the actual rock or mixed ground, observed abrasiveness and fractures, changes with depth, and the quality of sample needed. Those conditions, together with the rig and flushing arrangement, guide a configuration discussion. A broad label such as “hard rock” is insufficient to establish one universal bit choice, speed or life expectancy.

Compare the whole assembly

Check the bit outside diameter and core opening separately from the barrel dimensions. Confirm the thread, seating and flushing arrangement. A crown that looks similar may still have a different core opening or mating connection. Use the NTW / NQ / HQ ordering checklist before substituting between PDC and hot-pressed versions.

Decide what a trial should measure

For a site comparison, record the tool configuration, formation interval, rotation and feed settings, flushing conditions, drilled metres, observed wear and recovered sample. Keep penetration rate, bit life and core quality as separate observations. Compare like conditions so a project report can inform a repeat order.

Choose the next step

Use the core-bit catalogue to identify examples, then send the assembly drawing and ground description. If the task is hole enlargement, review reaming tools; if no sample is needed, compare non-coring designs within the PDC family.
